In Memory Of: John Schanilec
Comments: John Schanilec Family,
Just a short note to express my sympathy to you. I have known John for over 25 years. I played softball and tipped a few beers with John in Hazelton for many years. I credit John for teaching us young guys how to play softball. In fact, at the 2003 Hazelton Centennial celebration, he proudly wore his old softball uniform around town. He was an awesome guy. John was always the life of the party. He always had a funny story and was full of life. I also became an insurance agent and would call him for advice from time to time. He was always so helpful. I looked forward to seeing him at insurance meetings. I always teased him about the Sioux, and me being a Bison Alumni, he gave it right back to me. He was very proud of his children and grandchild. He always talked about you. We always emailed back and forth and I will miss that. He was a great friend to me and I will have many fond memories of him.

Comments: I first met Mary a few years ago when she would bring my son home to visit for the day. She was so full of energy and love. It was a joy just to be around her. My son was really attached to her and that told me she had a heart of gold. My sympathies go out to her family and friends. She will be deeply missed.

Comments: I only had the fortune of visiting with John occasionally over the last 5 years or so through my sisters back in Belfield (Patty H, Cindy E, Sandy S and Deb H). The girls thought of him as a brother and he was always welcome in their homes. The little I saw and got to visit him he treated me as a sister as well. He was a great friend to my family and I know he will be missed. Thank you to his parents.....they raised a nice man and thank you John for touching my life as well.

Comments: Our fondest memory of your dad and Grandfather is when he would come to our family get-togethers at my sister's (Patty Hutzenbiler) house. We so enjoyed his company. John always had a positive attitude and was a strong shoulder to lean on as well. In addition to being a great friend, he also handled our insurance needs. I am sure he pulled some hair out after all the times that I reported hitting a deer.... or two.... or three! He handled my dreaded calls with much patience. It is no secret he will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Comments: John and Kelly,
We want to express our sympathy on the loss of your father, John. We visited with him at a wedding in Drake, ND. What a great visit we had and sharing pictures of grandchildren. Kelly he was very proud to be a grandpa to you son. Mikie Kessel and I will always remember how he helped us when we operated All Occasion Bakery in Belfield at catering events. On one occasion he grill 200 steaks for us at an event in Medora. We received many comments on how "great" the steak were.
God has a special place in heaven for your dad. May God give you courage at this time.

In Memory Of: John Schanilec: my friend & co-worker
Comments: John, Kelly, David, Mrs. Schanilec and John's brothers and sisters: I first met John when he came to work at Great Plains National Bank in Belfield. I would always forget his last name and he said: like cadilac, but Schanilec!!! That was John, always making us laugh. John was always there to help someone. When kids would come in to him to ask him to sponsor their basketball team in a tournament, he never turned them down. John was like the big brother my sisters and I never had. He was always there for us, and to help us when we were down. But John knew how to pull a joke on someone. There were countless times, I was leaving work, and putting my jacket on, and I let out a scream!! He had a fake, furry spider, he would put in the sleeve of my jacket. I never met his mom, but I know she was very special to John. Mrs. Schanilec, thankyou for all your homemade bread John brought us to the bank, and all the baby blankets you have given to my neices, nephew, and my grandson. His kids, John and Kelly and grandson, David kept him going. He always talked about David and sending him to hockey camp. David had his own computer to play on, and John would have David show me how he could navigate on it. When my son was transferred to Grand Forks, John, right away, helped him find a apartment. Every visit we made to Grand Forks, we met up with John. I'll alway cherish those visits. I would send 3-corners for John, with Matthew when he came to Belfield. John would always call and say," where are the 3-corners? alot of times they remained in Matthews freezer!!. One summer when my daughter was about 5, we were at a auction sale and met up with John. My daughter Scoti wanted this stuffed 12 foot long snake. I said no. She begged me. I still said no. Next thing I know the auctioneer said sold. John told Scoti Jo to go get her SNAKE!!!. That was John, always making someone happy. John,,,I will miss you, but you will ALWAYS be in my thoughts... your friend and co-worker....Patty Hutzenbiler

Comments: We are very sad to hear about the passing of John. Kathy and I have many happy and fun memories with John over the years. I cherish the times we visited North Dakota and John would take me around to his various friends and "watering holes". I also remember a business trip that John made to Los Angeles. I took him to a Laker basketball game and they were playing a team that John happened to know one of the players. John went down during the warm up to talk to the player. It was funny to see John standing down there next to this guy 6 foot eight or nine.
Kathy has a vivid memory of one trip back to North Dakota. John was out front of Grandma Allen's home grilling a turkey which turned out great.
We extend our deepest sympathy and we will be praying God extends his peace and comfort to all of you at this sad time.
